Embracing Prenatal Mindfulness for Your (and Your Baby’s) Wellbeing

Written by Candi Seil, MPP of BabyKnow, an online video program focusing on infant growth and development.

Pregnancy is a time filled with anticipation, joy, and wonder. Your body is changing, your mind is full of thoughts, and your heart is expanding.

It may also feel overwhelming at times. You may navigate new challenges, emotions, and of course, physical changes. That’s where prenatal mindfulness comes in—a practice that can help you stay grounded, relaxed, and emotionally balanced as you navigate this beautiful journey.

Mindfulness during pregnancy allows you to be fully present with yourself, your body, and your baby—creating space to nurture your emotions, connect with your baby and tap into the power of positive thinking. By practicing mindfulness, you can create a peaceful space for both you and your baby to thrive.

What is Prenatal Mindfulness?

Prenatal mindfulness is the practice of being fully present, without judgment or deep thoughts. It involves tuning in to yourself with acceptance and compassion to bring a connection to your body, your baby, and your experience. Mindfulness has been proven to reduce anxiety, increase feelings of empowerment, and support emotional well-being.

Two key mindfulness practices for pregnancy are meditation and affirmations—tools that can be used to calm your mind, release stress, and create a positive, nurturing environment for both you and your baby.

A Simple Affirmation for Your Day

As an Affirmation Instructor for the BABY KNOW: Bodies, Hearts, and Minds Prenatal Mindfulness: Meditations and Affirmations course, I want to share with you one simple practice we teach in the course to set the tone for your day. Starting your morning with gratitude and a mindful affirmation can change your entire outlook on the day ahead.

I encourage you to try this now:

Place your hand on your heart, close your eyes, and take a deep breath. Say to yourself:

“The way I am caring for myself and my baby is beautiful. My body is beautiful.”

Take in another deep breath, allowing those words to sink in. Repeat this process, and then say:

“I am creating the perfect nurturing environment for my baby.”

Breathe deeply again and feel the energy of this affirmation fill your body with warmth and positivity.

Now, let’s take this one step further and talk directly to your baby. Place your hands gently on your belly, and say:

“Baby, I am so excited to meet you.”

Take in a deep breath, letting your excitement and love flow. Now, say:

“Baby, I am growing alongside of you.  We need each other.”

Breathe deeply, allowing that connection to deepen. Finally, say:

“Baby, we are going to be a great team.”

Take one last deep breath and feel the bond between you and your baby grow stronger with each word.

This simple affirmation practice can be an incredibly powerful tool to center yourself and create a sense of calm and connection right from the moment you wake up or as you end the day.
